April 24, 2010
Once a year, the Las Positas College Foundation holds a Black Tie fundraising event. The seventh annual BEST of the BEST gala was held on April 24, 2010. It was an evening of the BEST of the BEST in Performing Arts, gourmet food and fine local wine. During the evening, three local civic leaders, who are among the BEST of the BEST in their communities, were honored:
ValleyCare Health System
Alameda County Board of Supervisors
Richard H. Stulen, Ph.D,
Sandia National Laboratories / California
The evening began with guests sampling Livermore Valley wines from 13 vineyards and delicious hors d’oeuvres presented by eight exceptional Tri-Valley restaurants in the elegant Atrium Room on the Las Positas College campus.
Mid-way through the evening, the guests adjourned to the campus theater for a Performing Arts Showcase featuring student presentations from the musical Rent, the Choral Jazz choir and interpretive speaking. Presentations were made to our Best of the Best Community Honorees by LPC President, DeRionne P. Pollard assisted by the Showcase host, Faith Alpher. The evening was capped off with a dessert and champagne celebration of the College and the Honorees.
During the evening, guests bid on unique items including wine country packages and meals, adventures such as a week in Belize, high-end life style packages for professional cultural and sporting events, special jewelry items as well as lots ranging from free professional tailoring to a “Kids Dream Package” that included a red wagon, tickets to Disneyland and an ice cream cake!
The goal of the annual event is to produce an elegant – but low-overhead – evening to maximize the profit for the Foundation’s continuing support of the College community. Toward this end, the food, wine and auction items were all donated and the on-campus venue was cost-free. There was an event-history high number of Business sponsors. In addition, many of the support elements, such as lighting, decorations and rentals, were provided at or below cost. The result was a lovely evening that netted nearly $90,000 with the beneficiaries being the students, staff, faculty and greater community that Las Positas College serves.
